Just finished Sandra McDonald's The Stars Down Under. The reviews of this are mostly not very good; I can see why, but I enjoyed it anyway. It's a lot heavier on the mystical side of things, with little of the Naval atmosphere of the first book. Plenty of room for another sequel.

Sandra McDonald, The Outback Stars. A very good navy-in-space yarn with some interesting mystical overtones. It also doesn't assume that the future will be American/European. This seems to be McDonald's first book; I will definitely be looking for more as she writes them.
